After crossing Canada from coast to coast
(2003 to 2005), our 2006 Expedition Education journey, took us back to lighthouses and the majestic fury of Newfoundland’s rugged Atlantic coast. Not having joined Confederation until 1949, Newfoundland boasts an independent nature and remarkable history set amidst breathtaking scenery.
Our unforgettable motor home adventure was highlighted by visits to historic St. John’s, Cape Spear (the easternmost point in North America) and Bonavista, site of John Cabot’s landing in 1497.

En route, we stayed in remote outports (Woody Island in Placentia Bay) and toured in and around historic Conception Bay, visiting communities such as Brigus, Cupids, Harbour Grace and
Heart’s Content. On Newfoundland’s rugged north coast, we enjoyed a relaxing stay in the beautiful fishing/sealing port of Twillingate.

We saw puffins, murres, gannets, bald eagles, whales, moose, and magnificent fjords. We also enjoyed the legendary hospitality and musical traditions of countless Newfoundlanders.

A big island, “the rock” is one of Canada’s true treasures.

From icebergs to millenium-old Viking settlements, Newfoundland is as timeless and mystical as the mists that shroud its craggy, desolate coast.

West Wind originated as the senior campus of Dearcroft Montessori School (est. 1968), and acted as an independent preparatory day school program offering Senior Elementary (grades 4 – 6) and Junior High (grades 7/8).  In 2008, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Dearcroft Montessori, we combined as a single campus.  Our program is now fully operated from the Dearcroft campus at 1167 Lakeshore Road East, Oakville.
