EXPEDITION EDUCATION OVERVIEW

Through an integrated, experiential based model, WWJH students have had the opportunity to actually explore their land; Canada's magnificent geography, diverse regions and the fascinating history of her people and communities. An increasingly popular approach to learning, experiential education has emerged as an essential key to opening many of life's doors - it is critical in an individual's development of life skills and character.  Adventure can inspire us, unlock hidden potential, broaden our horizons, awaken our spirits and refresh our senses.

Established in 1996, this award winning experiential education program has taken students across Canada. We offer at least one trip per year to explore the spectacular natural wonders of the country.  These trips usually run about 10 days and use a combination of planes, trains, automobiles, motor homes and ferries.  Students receive an unparalleled first-hand education of different Canadian regions.  Expedition Education has allowed over 100 of our students to explore Canada coast-to-coast, covering a combined 25,000+ km!

By exploring provincial and national parks, world heritage sites and culturally significant destinations, students come to understand the significance of our country's origins. An appreciation of political and physical geography and history, on a regional and national level, can best come alive when the lessons come first hand... not just from a textbook - there is no substitute for walking on the same rocks where John Cabot landed at Bonavista in 1497 or for standing beside the commemorative cairn at Craigellachie in the Rockies at the exact spot where the last railway spike was driven to conclude the construction of the CPR.  The value of experiential education is in the opportunity to inspire and motivate through the power of memory and experience.  No classroom resource can compete with this.

IN THE HEART OF OAKVILLE

HISTORY

West Wind originated as the senior campus of Dearcroft Montessori School (est. 1968), and acted as an independent preparatory day school program offering Senior Elementary (grades 4 – 6) and Junior High (grades 7/8).  In 2008, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Dearcroft Montessori, we combined as a single campus.  Our program is now fully operated from the Dearcroft campus at 1167 Lakeshore Road East, Oakville.
