Testimonials from a West Wind Montessori mother & daughter (Received eight years apart!)

“... If you are looking for a school with an integrated curriculum delivered by exceptional teachers with a low teacher/student ratio, check out West Wind. During her 3 years at West Wind, my daughter has participated in educational excursions, drama and dance extravaganzas and wonderful sports programs. She has developed a love of learning and wonderful friendships. I highly recommend West Wind if you are looking for a school where your child is a valued member of an educational community. If I were going to open an Independent School, it would be just like West Wind Montessori.”

“Greetings from La Belle Province. This is Stephanie Gioskos. I've been meaning to send this email for a while. When I first came to West Wind the public school system had failed me, my mother had worked tirelessly teaching me how to read, but I continued to hate school. I came to West Wind under these circumstances but it ended up being exactly what I needed. The small class sizes and extra one on one help gave me the basics of learning that I had missed out on. Our field trips and Expedition Education journeys gave me the passion for learning that drove me to keep going. The trip that has been recently coming back to me often is our visit to the Anishnabek (Ojibway) community at Christian Island. I wish I had more context to appreciate the experience that was put in front of me. It still bothers me that I didn't get up and dance with those girls when they asked me. I'm still upset with myself that I was too embarrassed to appreciate what a beautiful culture the Native people have. I've actually referenced that trip in papers for two classes in university so far (Race and Ethnicity and Natives of North America). While finishing High School after I left West Wind I discovered I was smart because of the skills I gained at West Wind! I got into all the universities of my choice with scholarships, but I decided to take a risk and I moved to Quebec. I now go to Bishop's University. It's essentially what West Wind would have been had it been a university. I'm in my second year as a Sociology major with a concentration in Global Studies and the Empire and I'm minoring in Indigenous Studies, Political Science and Religion with high hopes of going to law school at University of Saskatchewan to become an aboriginal land claims lawyer. So Mr. Phippen, this is a thank you letter.
A thanks to you and all the teachers of West Wind. It took a lot of people to get me where I am today but there's really no one else to give credit to for helping me develop my love for learning and letting me become such an individual thinker. I don’t think anyone could have done it better. My only wish is that I appreciated it more at the time”.‬
Thank you so so so much,‬

“... We have been West Wind parents since the school's establishment in 1999 and our daughters have been associated with schools run by the Phippen family for over a decade. During that time we have been enthusiastic members of the school community. Developing good work habits, setting goals for achievement, tolerating and learning from failure, while always remaining curious and interested in the world, are qualities that the West Wind staff and administration have fostered in our children. These very qualities contribute to success in school but more importantly to success in life. Truly enriched and nurturing, the environment at West Wind has allowed our children to blossom.”

West Wind originated as the senior campus of Dearcroft Montessori School (est. 1968), and acted as an independent preparatory day school program offering Senior Elementary (grades 4 – 6) and Junior High (grades 7/8).  In 2008, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Dearcroft Montessori, we combined as a single campus.  Our program is now fully operated from the Dearcroft campus at 1167 Lakeshore Road East, Oakville.
